Monster Dash was only the start of the adventures of Barry Steakfries and now devotees of his monster-stomping ways can blast through time and space in Halfbrick Studio's latest release, Age of Zombies.
At first glance, the game couldn't seem more conventional as you blast away at zombies with a pistol loaded with infinite ammo and maneuver your barely shaven hero around the screen with twin-stick controls. But then the little details start to shine through and what should be just another action title quickly ramps up in to an all-out war against zombie-kind. Zombies pour through time-portals in surprisingly huge numbers and you'll need to make use of the environment to funnel or group them effectively to devastate them with various power-ups that add to your arsenal. And don't think you can merely kite them forever as each time period adds unique zombie variants and multiple spawning points around each level to quickly surround and munch on Mr. Steakfries' face.
It may be late to mention it now, but it should be said that the visuals are 'colorful' in terms of gore, but in typical Halfbrick style the artwork is lovingly detailed despite the pixel art style and hints of classics like Metal Slug shine through (I swear when he says 'shotgun!' I get flashbacks to the arcade). As you complete each area in the main campaign you'll also unlock an endless mode for the usual high-score shenanigans that are expected of these titles.
Instead of aiming for innovation, Age of Zombies goes for 'bigger & better' and Halfbrick Studios manages to pull it off with style. Age of Zombies crosses swords (or is that pistols?) with the best of the crowd and may just re-kindle your joy for mass zombie slaughter.
Conclusion
Age of Zombies goes for bigger, badder and better and as a result Halfbrick studios manages to rekindle the magic of slaughtering zombies en masse.

Those annoying Christmas zombie elves sure did overstay their welcome but thankfully they've now buggered off back to the North Pole! Barry will miss the Eggnog parties though...Age of Zombies also now supports Fast App Switching (Multitasking) on compatible iOS 4.0+ devices. Finally you can be killing zombies whilst at the same time swapping out to look up websites dedicated to Barry Steakfries or even calling all your friends to tell them they are n00bs without having to restart a level when you return to the game!Requirements

Age of Zombies is nice, for sure, but for me the king of dual stick shooters is still Solomon's Keep and Solomon's Boneyard. They are the way these games should be- excellent gameplay and graphics, with A LOT more depth. The perks system in Boneyard is something that brings you back to playing survival over and over again, something other dual stick shooters fail to do including this one. Add to that the random dungeons in Keep and RPG elements in both are tremendous for replayability. Seriously, I've spent playing each longer than most console games! It's a shame that Raptisoft (maker of both) for some reason doesn't get the credit and exposure that Halfbrick does or other iOS devs do as well. Here's a shout out to all you - at least give the lite version of Solomon's Keep a try, and for $1 each they are amazing value.

Boneyard is already a 5/5 must have in my opinion :) Keep took a few updates to reach the same level, but I still bought it instantly. They're definitely an underrated developer, though it helps that Halfbrick have excellent word of mouth (if you're a resident of Brisbane/Gold Coast in Australia you'll know what I mean) and have a lot more experience as a developer in handheld games :)

Hi Andrew, I liked Age of Zombies, but got done with it in pretty much 2 one hour sessions. And as it costs $3 which is more than both the Solomons combined, in which I think I must've put about 15 hours into each, and you see what I mean about replayability and longevity of a game. I just think these 2 games are masterful in game design and it bothers me Raptisoft doesn't get the credit and success he deserves. For me Age of Zombies is a 4/5 and the price should be no more than $2. But this is just my opinion of course.

I just posted a review of SB on here and mentioned SK a lot as well. Solomon's Keep is the masterpiece (IMO) and SB is a fun & enjoyable derivative game. The style of those apps (& the pricing too) is great.
People, install free 'AppShopper' iphone app & grab these apps when they have a price drop. (Or use PandoraBox, Appminer, Appsniper, etc.) Itunes & Appstore are kinda flawed, these apps help smooth out the kinks.
